The cathodic protection and stray current protection measures of reinforced bar are assumed to have extended electrical continuity through the reinforced bar. Most reinforced concrete structures with steel bars belong to this situation. But this should be verified by measuring the resistance of the reinforced fabric. To this end, after the concrete has been removed at different points far away, the measuring cable is connected to the reinforcing steel bar. In order to avoid the influence of contact resistance, the rust at the contact point should be completely removed.

The loose old concrete must be removed before the anode system is installed. The high-pressure water gun or sand blasting equipment can be used to complete this task. The external surface of the anode attached must be roughened to ensure that the anode is firmly combined with the sprayed cement. Cracks in the concrete must be cleaned to the bottom of the leakage with a chisel. Depending on the extent of damage to the covered concrete layer, anodes can be attached in a different way.

When large area damage occurs, remove the concrete until the top layer of reinforcing mesh is applied, then spray the first layer of concrete, fix the anode on this layer, and then spray the second layer of concrete. If the large area of old concrete is still strong, the anode can be attached to it, and finally embedded with sprayed concrete. The anode must supply the required protection current, and it must be very strong in structure. During the spraying process or operation, the bonding between the old concrete and the newly sprayed concrete must not be damaged. In the initial repair of chloride contaminated concrete pavement, the ferrosilicon anode is embedded in a layer of coke slag, or the current is connected by precious metal wires buried in conductive mineral embedded materials.

In the design of cathodic protection for concrete structures, it is convenient to divide the surface to be protected into several separate areas, which should take into account the local steel area and water distribution in unit concrete volume. The control of cathodic protection is realized by measuring the potential, and the potential is measured by the built-in reference electrode and the mobile electrode on the surface. Since the object to be protected represents a battery composed of active steel and passive steel, it must be expected that the current of the battery will cause large IR drop error when measuring the off potential.
