Chemical cleaning of cathodic protection material magnesium alloy includes steam degreasing, solvent cleaning, emulsifying cleaning, alkali cleaning and pickling.
Steam degreasing and solvent cleaning for the removal of grease, processing lubricants, wax, quenching oil, rust preventive oil, polishing and abrasives and other soluble dirt and contaminants. Solid particles, such as machine-made dust and debris, are cleaned by solvent washing along with grease removal. Solvent cleaning was carried out before alkali washing, spraying, electroplating and electrochemical oxidation, as well as before and after machining and molding. In other cases, solvent cleaning is not mandatory and depends on the amount of residual grease to be removed.
The chemical cleaning method, equipment and solvent of magnesium alloy are the same as those of other metals. Steam degreasing is the preferred method. The most commonly used solvents are trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. Dichloromethane is very effective in removing residual organic penetrant on the surface of porous castings. This kind of solvent has no harmful effect on magnesium alloy, but the mixed solvent containing methanol can not be used for magnesium alloy in any case.
Emulsion cleaning is the dispersion of organic solvents in water to remove grease and polishing abrasives. The emulsifier is neutral or alkaline, so it is not corrosive to magnesium alloy. When the emulsifier cleans the serious dirt, the next thin layer of grease may be left, which must be removed by the next alkali washing. Before using professional magnesium alloy cleaning agent, its safety and effectiveness should be tested.
