Preparation measures for cathodic protection of storage tank

The storage tank and the auxiliary pipeline requiring cathodic protection must be electrically insulated from other metal devices. Insulation joints can be used to make all steel pipes and coated copper pipes of underground storage tanks under cathodic protection. The insulation joint shall be installed at the pipeline entrance of the building and the pump base of the gas station. In order to prevent the corrosion of the above-mentioned components due to the formation of corrosive batteries, it is recommended to select the insulating joint which can be inspected so as to realize the electrical separation between the refueling area and the building.


In recent years, in some types of gas stations, corrosion-resistant materials have been used between the filter and the dehydration separator, as well as the outlet pipes and valves. Generally, stainless steel is used, while aluminum alloy is used in a few cases. If these parts are to be buried in the ground, they must have good insulation and anticorrosion coating and be electrically separated from other tank installations with insulated joints.


Where pipes enter buildings or oil pools, efforts must be made to avoid accidental electrical contact between these pipes and conduits. In the preparation measures, the soil resistivity of the anode area should be measured. The necessary electrical safety measures must be taken when the forced current cathodic protection is implemented. The complete cathodic protection can be realized by using a small protection current density on the newly built storage tank, so that there is no harmful interference to the nearby structures. On the existing old storage tank, according to the current situation of the tank and pipe anti-corrosion coating, it is expected to require relatively high protection current density.


Experience shows that even for old storage tanks, it is possible to achieve adequate cathodic protection in most cases. However, compared with new storage tanks, the workload and cost of cathodic protection for old storage tanks are higher.
