Distance analysis between anode and protection structure

Assuming that other factors are constant, the current obtained at a certain point of protective structure such as storage tank and pipeline is inversely proportional to the distance from anode. Taking the cathodic protection of tank bottom as an example, if the anode is too close to the tank bottom, the current distribution is very uneven, resulting in over protection of one side near the anode and insufficient protection on the other side.


If the distance between the anode and the tank bottom increases, the resistance difference of the current circuit between the tank bottom points and the anode decreases, and the current distribution tends to be uniform. On the other hand, the total resistance of the circuit increases and the cathodic protection current decreases with the increase of the distance between anode and tank bottom. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the applied voltage. From the point of view of current distribution, the anode will have an optimal position.


The distance from the bottom of the tank to the anode bottom is not allowed. If this can not be done, distributed anode or deep well anode should be used. The distance between the upper end of deep well anode and the ground should not be less than 10m to make the current distribution uniform.


For the long-distance pipeline with cathodic protection, the uniform current distribution can be obtained by increasing the distance between anode and pipeline or by evenly arranging anode. If the anode is too close to the pipeline, the pipeline near the anode will be over protected, while the part far away from the pipeline will not be protected enough. If the anode is too far away from the pipeline, the whole pipeline will be under protected. At this time, if the pipeline is still fully protected, only increase the applied voltage. The best position of the anode should make the farthest end of the pipeline be effectively protected, and there is no over protection at the confluence point.
